MBBS admission in India: a guide for NEET students
MBBS seats in India are allotted only through NEET-UG and official counselling. Government seats are the most sought after, but India also has a large number of private medical colleges and deemed universities, where fees are much higher.
XEAL Education Works currently guides students on admission to 21 private medical colleges and deemed universities across India, including Amrita (Kochi and Faridabad), Bharati Vidyapeeth (Pune), BLDE (Vijayapura), Apollo Institute (Hyderabad) and others. Their total fees are listed in the table above.
Course duration and structure
| Total duration | 5.5 years: 4.5 years of study plus a 1-year compulsory rotating internship |
|---|---|
| Regulator | National Medical Commission (NMC) |
| Admission | Through NEET-UG and official counselling only (MCC or state) |
| Medium of instruction | English |
How MBBS counselling works
- All India Quota (MCC): 15% of seats in government medical colleges, plus all seats in deemed universities, central universities, AIIMS and JIPMER, are filled through Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) counselling.
- State quota: the remaining 85% of government seats, and most seats in private colleges, are filled through each state's own counselling, usually for students with that state's domicile.
- Management and NRI quota: private colleges and deemed universities also have management and NRI seats, with higher fees.
Eligibility
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, with the minimum marks set by the NMC (usually 50% in PCB for the general category, 40% for reserved categories).
- NEET-UG qualified, at or above the qualifying percentile.
- At least 17 years old by 31 December of the admission year.
Fees
Government college fees are low. Private and deemed university fees are much higher: at the colleges we work with, total fees currently range from about ₹33 lakh to over ₹1.3 crore for the full course, depending on the college and quota. See the table above for each college.
